Integrating social networking tools into ESL writing classroom: strength and weaknesses

Summary

The article is revolving around integrating social networking services (SNS) into ESL writing classroom along with its advantages and disadvantages. One of the advantages of using SNS in ESL writing class is it enables students to broaden their knowledge. Constant information exchange between students and up-to-date news feed indirectly help them to learn more. Besides, the uses of SNSs are completely different and much more interesting compare to the traditional way of learning. So, the students will feel much more excited to get involved and not easily get bored .Moreover , the fact that the use of SNSs does not involve any face-to-face interactions with others make the student feel more secured from any possible embarrassment due to their lacks of English skills. However, the students will find it hard to concentrate. They will get distracted by news feed and constant status update. Other than that, lack of equipment and limited internet access will also get in the way. Besides that, teachers’ insufficient time to interact with students .Teachers are also normal human being, who have other responsible besides their job such as their family.

My Experience

The idea of using SNS in ESL writing classroom pique my interest instantly. If I were in school again, I would be very eager to learn using this method. New way of learning will stimulates you to think differently and see things from a different perspective. However, through these past few years I could only see the practicality of SNSs in connecting people and sharing things. It will be a challenge for the students to stay focus. Plus, not every school in Sabah has internet connection especially in the rural area. This method is surely can be practice but it also depends on the location and early planning.
What Will I Do

If I am going to integrate SNSs into my teaching session, I will not depend on the SNS as the core of my teaching routines. I will use it only as a side activity. This is because, I preferred face-to-face interaction between teacher and students rather that exchange messages online. Sometimes, it is much easier to understand an explanation when the person who explains is in front of you compare to in the one written form. The students also need to develop their confidence level instead of hiding behind monitors and speak through keyboards.
